Throwback Thursday A Study In Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A Study In Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the first of the Sherlock Holmes stories written. This is where Dr. Watson and Holmes meet and the fun begins.


Dr. Watson has been injured and is recovering from his war injuries and needs an place to stay. Holmes needs a roommate so when they are introduced it seems like a perfect fit for both of them. Dr. Watson soon learns of Holmes quirky eccentric ways and his ability to solve puzzles and mysteries especially when there is a murder to solve. When a body is found with no clues except a ring and word written in blood Holmes and Watson are there to figure it out. So the fun begins in this first book and goes on from there.


As I look back at books I have read in the past that helped me to develop my love of mystery I must and will include the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle starting with this first one.


I hope you will give it a try if you haven't read it I don't think you will be disappointed.

Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams Cooks Up a Good Charming Cozy Mystery

Pies and Prejudice A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery by Ellery Adams is the first in the series that I have read and I must admit I found it charming and fun to read. It is a series I will be reading more of.


Ella Mae moves back to Havenwood, GA her hometown after finding her husband cheating on her.  Her serenity and comfort is found in her baking and so that is what she does. Her Mother and Aunts talk her into opening the Charmed Pie Shoppe and help her to make it happen. Ella Mae's new start gets bumpy though when her High School bully's fiancé is killed and Ella Mae is a suspect in his murder. Ella Mae and her Aunts and Mother decide they need to find out who the killer really is and why he was killed to clear Ella's name.


I love the quirky Aunts and Mother they all have a little magic and Ella is just finding out about her magic that is found in her baking and theirs while trying to find the murderer. This is such a fun read and it has everything, twists and turns that makes you keep guessing who the murderer is and why, and I must admit it wasn't who I thought it would be, he has a good mystery plot and enough magic to be fun. I would recommend this book to others who like cozy mysteries.


I love the included recipes also as a plus.

5 Stars to Avenged A Pacific Coast Justice Series by Janice Cantore

I give Avenged  Pacific Coast Justice Series by Janice Cantore 5 stars because it is a plot that could be from the news headlines in any city. Carly is a policeman on the streets while her husband is a detective in the gang unit. Carly and her partner find three young gang members shot execution style with a rival gangs tags  near the bodies. Carly and her husband Nick work to get to the bottom of these killings before a gang war starts. Carly and Nick aren't sure if it is the gangs or someone who wants a gang war to start so they must hurry and find the killers before things get out of hand all the while Carly is hounded by a obnoxious want to be reporter Ginny Masters and her boyfriend Dean Barton, who seems to have one mission to discredit Carly.  Things are moving fast and Carly, Nick and the police need to work fast to stop further killings and themselves safe.


This book has everything a good mystery should. It has many different suspects with different motives, action, and suspense. Just when you think you know who was behind everything and why something happens and it changes what you thought you knew. The twists and turns get you guessing until the end and it is somewhat a surprise when you find out what is going on. The only thing this book doesn't have is graphic bloody scenes and bad language which makes it even more of a plus.


This book is well written and I enjoyed the read. Another thing I enjoyed was how the author brings faith and God in. Carly and Nick helps ex gang member Londy who is out of the gangs and living for God. They all go to church together and the church helps other kids who have been in trouble too. This plays into the plot and adds another element to the suspect list and motives.


Overall I think this book is one that if you like mystery, police stories and is a realistic story then you will like this book. This is the third book in the Pacific Coast Justice Series and even though I had not read any of the other books in the series it was easy to follow along. This can be read as a stand alone book but I am going to get the other two books because I liked this one so much.

Throwback Thursday My Choice is The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

 I was thinking about classic mysteries that I think all mystery lovers should read and probably right up there on the list with Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be the all time great mystery The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. This classic is just as good today as when it was written and I believe everyone should read it and add it to their libraries.


Sam Spade is a tough private detective who has to find out who has killed his partner and how does the Maltese Falcon fit into the picture. He is the kind of dogged detective that gets a hold of the bone so to speak and doesn't let go, if Sam is on your trail you might as well give up.  I love the quote “Yes,' Spade growled. 'And when you're slapped you'll take it and like it.' He released Cairo's wrist and with a thick open hand struck the side of his face three times savagely.”

This is probably one of my favorite all time books and characters. I hope if you haven't read it you will. So for my Throwback Thursday choice is The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Please give it a try Sam Spade won't disappoint.

New Cozy Series and I love it

 Today I am trying to catch up on some of my Reviews of books I have finished recently. I have been doing a lot of reading and have been lucky to read some really good books. One of the books I read was     Final Sentence  A Cookbook Nook Mystery By Daryl Wood Gerber which is a new cozy mystery series and I will give it 5 stars.


Jenna returns home to Crystal Cove to open a Cookbook store and café with her Aunt Vera hoping to find a new start and be able to move on after her husbands death. Her life gets real interesting when her friend Desiree Divine, who is the first celebrity chef to come sign her books at the store, ends up  murdered and Jenna is consider a suspect. Jenna has to solve her friends murder and get her name off the suspect list without becoming a victim too.

I love the idea of a Cookbook store like this one that has more than just cookbooks, it has the cookbooks, cooking supplies and culinary cozy mysteries. What a great idea and I really found myself wishing that I could go to this shop or better yet own it. The suspects on the list of could be killers is enough to keep you guessing to the end of the book. Jenna is a strong, capable, but at times emotional woman, who is determined to make sure the sheriff, whose mother is bent on making Jenna the one convicted of the murder, take her off the suspect list  and to find the real killer. She gets into to some sticky situations and puts herself in danger trying to find the answers. I enjoyed the book and the plot and setting were unique. This is a winner and I can't wait till the next one comes out on 4 March 2014

Throwback Thursday Agatha Christie Fan from Teen Years

This Throwback Thursday I wanted to share my love of Agatha Christie. I think from the first book of hers I read I loved her. I read Murder On The Orient Express and I jumped on that train of Christie Fans and I never got off it. I love Agatha Christie books and I decided to read all her books again when I was given as a gift some of her books. I decided to read them from the beginning and not jump around if I can. I started with her first book of Hercule Piorot The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot #1) by Agatha Christie



I enjoyed reading this again as much if not more than when I read it the first time.


  Hastings is recovering from a war injury and joins an old friend at his family home Styles. Mrs. Inglethorpe the step mother of Hastings friend John is poisoned while Hastings is staying there.
Hastings enlists the help of the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot to help find the killer. Hercule leads Hastings around trying to groom him into using his as Hercule would say "his little grey cells" to find the killer. We see from this first book that Hercule is pompous, full of himself and very good as a detective while Hastings seems to always jump to the wrong conclusions and Poirot has to show him the errors of his ways in Hastings thinking.


Their are many suspects that could have killed Mrs. Inglethorpe so it isn't an obvious easy mystery but one that you have to keep changing how you think and who you think has done the deed.


You can't go wrong reading this book either again or for the first time. Agatha Christie has a way of keeping your interest by never making the murder simple and easy to solve.


I hope if you have never read any of Agatha Christie's books that you will give them a try and maybe start from the beginning with this book.

Throw Back Thursday Mystery from childhood

Today on Throwback Thursday I wanted to share another one of my favorite mystery series that I still have to admit I read today when I am feeling nostalgic and that is the Nancy Drew Mysteries. Who as a kid didn't want to be Nancy Drew or one of the Hardy Boys. I can still remember reading the first Nancy Drew Mystery The Secret of the Old Clock (Nancy Drew #1)

Next I read  The Hidden Staircase (Nancy Drew #2) by Carolyn Keene
I was hooked and read as many of the series as I could. I have just recently started reading them again starting with the first in the series. I still like to read them and love to share them with youngsters that love to read. If you are a girl in my family you will be getting one of these as a present from me to hopefully spark your love to read and to love the mystery genre as well as Nancy Drew. I am reading again The Hidden Staircase now and plan on going right on through the whole series.
